Understanding Chemical Structure Labels?
The DNA and RNA molecules have polarity. The two ends are different. The convention is that the DNA/RNA starts at the 5' (think "five prime") and goes towards the 3' ("three prime") end. The 5' end has the phosphate, and the 3' end has an -OH on it.
