Was the French revolution a success or a failure?

The revolution failed for one major reason. The revolutionaries spoke of freedom and equality, but put in power a man more tyrannical than the prior king of france. The revolution was also very unorganized and lacked the fairly smooth transition of power. Unlike other revolutions of the time, the French revolution did not create a democracy right afterward, so it failed in its goal of restoring freedom to the people.
