Gateway Laptop problems help please?

A friend gave me their laptop to fix, The power on lights up like it should but there is no screen. The status on does not flash and also the num lock, and Cap lock light aren't coming on either. Possibly a Hard drive problem? On my Dell Laptop I can take my hard drive out and the screen still comes up. I need help please lol.
