Can you be so comfortable with friends that you can make race based jokes?

In our group, we have an indian dude, an old white guy (double whammy), a black dude, mexican couple, a chinese chick and a korean dude. We hang out, make jokes, stupid jokes, but sometimes race based like related to work, school, basic motor skills, etc. Like our friends, "Harold and Kumar"... The "Watchout Asian female driver," oh no, "Fried Chicken night again?" Nothing derogatory, mean or disrespectful, just funny/ maybe true ;) My caucasian co-worker is too serious, that he believes that all minorities are as serious as him and out to get him if he make just one racial joke... and I look at him and tell him, "Man, we are so comfortable with our race and each other, that it isn't something to get all worked up. But the jokes need to be among good friends that can take jokes, and yes, not made in the office. Anyone else have this relationship with friends?
